Itโ€™s Not Too Late

Teeth move at any age. The biology that lets an orthodontist straighten a fourteen-year-oldโ€™s smile works the same way at forty. Adults make up a real share of the patients we treat, and most of them spent years assuming theyโ€™d missed their chance.

Jaw Pain, Clicking, and TMJ

Jaw pain is one of the most common reasons adults call us, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

TMJ disorders โ€” jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, trouble opening wide, a jaw that catches or locks โ€” are real, and they are treatable. In many of the patients we see, an uneven bite goes along with clenching or grinding that picks up during stressful stretches. That leaves the muscles around the jaw joint tight, and tight muscles are what make the jaw ache and hard to open.

We can easily detect bite unevenness by taking a scan during your consultation and discuss treatment options with you.

Why Adults Come In

They never had treatment. Braces werenโ€™t in the budget, or werenโ€™t a priority, or the timing never worked. Thatโ€™s the most common story we hear.

They had braces, and the teeth moved back. This one frustrates people, and it shouldnโ€™t be embarrassing โ€” itโ€™s almost always retainer wear that tapered off years ago. Teeth drift for the rest of your life without something holding them. Correcting relapse is often a shorter, simpler case than the original treatment was.

Something practical is bothering them. Teeth wearing down unevenly. Crowding that makes a spot impossible to floss no matter how carefully you try. A bite that puts strain on one side. These are the reasons that come with a health argument attached, not just a cosmetic one.

Theyโ€™re tired of not smiling in photos. Thatโ€™s a good enough reason on its own.

Discretion

Most adults ask about this before anything else.

Clear aligners are difficult to notice across a conference table or on a video call. They come out for a lunch meeting and go back in afterward. For a lot of adult patients, this is the deciding factor, and itโ€™s a legitimate one โ€” treatment youโ€™ll actually go through with beats treatment you keep postponing.

Where a case genuinely calls for braces, weโ€™ll tell you, and weโ€™ll talk through the options that keep them as discreet as possible.

Whatโ€™s Different About Treating Adults

Adult treatment isnโ€™t just teen treatment on an older patient, and weโ€™d rather set expectations properly:

  • Your jaw is done growing. That narrows some options and rules out a few, but it doesnโ€™t rule out treatment. It mostly means weโ€™re moving teeth rather than guiding bone.

  • Gum and bone health come first. If thereโ€™s active gum disease or untreated decay, that gets handled before we move anything. Weโ€™ll coordinate with your general dentist.

  • Smaller corrections can be genuinely quick. Not every case is two years. If whatโ€™s bothering you is a few front teeth, say so at the consultation โ€” the answer may be much shorter than youโ€™re bracing for.

  • Retainers are permanent, and weโ€™ll be straight about that. However the treatment goes, keeping the result means wearing a retainer at night indefinitely. Everyone whoโ€™s had relapse learned this the hard way.
